Hi chaps,

I run a recording studio in the UK and have here my trusty High Sierra build. As some of you may know Logic Pro X 10.5 just recently dropped and it requires at least Mojave to run :(

So, I'm planning to upgrade my system but never previously went above High Sierra due to the NVIDIA Web Drivers situation with my graphics card.

My current rig:
  • ASUS Prime Z370-A
  • Intel i7 8700k @ 4.6Ghz
  • NVIDIA GTX 1080Ti
  • 16GB 3200Mhz DDR4
  • Samsung Pro 960 NVME M.2
  • Custom watercooling in a Fractal Design case
What I'm looking at upgrading to:
  • Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master
  • Intel i7 9900K
  • Phanteks Luxe 719 case
The big question I have is can I keep the 1080ti? Whats going on with the whole NVIDIA web drivers situation or will I need to purchase something like a Radeon 5700XT instead?

Best,

Tom

Your GTX 1080 Ti will not work in Mojave or Catalina. So you would need to drop that dGPU.

The RX 5700 XT card would be the logical choice when switching to a high end AMD dGPU.

Why do you need to replace the rest of your rig? Just replace the dGPU with an AMD card and your current rig will work just fine in Mojave or Catalina.

You might want to double up on the RAM to 32GB, but other than that your current rig would probably run macOS just as well as your new upgraded rig.

Thanks for the reply EdHawk!

I need to upgrade as I run high sample rates in the studio (96/24) and this puts a lot of stress on the system when doing music production in Logic Pro X.

Unless Apple have done some optimising behind the scenes from High Sierra vs. Catalina then Ill need some beefier hardware to stop the constant system overloads I am experiencing whilst working.

So annoying about the 1080ti its a great card :(

I am currently running my first Hackintosh, I am using a very low power Nvidia GT 710 graphics card, based on what your stating I could just drop in my GTX 960 Nvidia card with no other work todo?

@drw1710, the Nvidia GTX 960 won't work in macOS Catalina. There are no compatible drivers available for Mojave or Catalina. The only Nvidia cards that work in these two versions of macOS are the older Kepler series of cards, as Apple provide drivers for these cards as part of macOS.

See this link for details of which Nvidia card works in which version of macOS - https://dortania.github.io/GPU-Buyers-Guide/modern-gpus/nvidia-gpu.html
