Fix ASUS SupremeFX S1220A Hackintosh Audio

When I first started running macOS on my ASUS Z270 hackintosh I was having trouble with audio breaking. I made a guide on how to fix it for those who need help.

If you have an ASUS motherboard with macOS installed on it these combinations of changes may fix these issues:

  • Audio not working on boot
  • Front Headphone jack not outputting audio
  • Audio breaking after sleep randomly

ASUS Hackintosh Audio Guide

I think these problems are being caused by the fact that ASUS puts their own spin on the audio chipsets in their motherboards. A new audio codec called ALC1220 came out with Kaby Lake motherboards and ASUS has their own version called FX S1220a. I wrote this guide down as a means to fix the audio for this specific chipset, but the steps may also work for different motherboards that don’t have this FX S1220a chipset as long as you use the proper layout-id.

Proper ASUS layout-id

If your motherboard doesn’t use FX S1220a look at Step 3 of this audio guide for a proper number to set in the Inject box.

  • Mount your EFI partition and navigate to EFI/Clover/
  • Open config.plist using Clover Configurator
  • Click Devices on the left side column
  • Under the Audio box set Inject to 7

Set Darkwake properly
  1. The two settings that work the best on ASUS motherboards is darkwake and darkwake=1 the other darkwake settings are counter productive trying to get audio fixed and can cause it to break when waking from sleep
  • Open config.plist using Clover Configurator
  • Click Boot on the left side column
  • Select darkwake or darkwake=1 from the drop down menu (I prefer darkwake=1)
  • Save config.plist

Set Acpi flags

I have two Acpi Arguments set in config.plist one to fix shutdown and another to fix HDA or the audio driver of macOS.

  1. Open config.plist using Clover Configurator
  2. Select Acpi on side column
  3. Check the box next to FixShutdown_0004
  4. Check the box next to FixHDA_8000
  5. Save config.plist and close it.

Audio Kexts

I’m using four different audio kexts. You can use the latest version of each kext if you want. I’m using version 1.1.3 of AppleALC.kext and version 1.1.6 of Lilu.kext, which works just fine.

AppleALC.kext and Lilu.kext is what enables audio output on a hackintosh. I also use CodecCommander.kext that helps with low audio volume or cutting and finally HDMIAudio.kext to enable HDMI audio output on my AMD RX 560.

  1. Use the Kext Page to download AppleALC.kext, Lilu,kext, CodecCommander.kext and HDMIAudio.kext
  2. Mount your Clover EFI Partition
  3. Place the kexts in EFI/Clover/kexts/Other
  4. Restart hackintosh.

Conclusion

These combinations of steps stopped my audio from breaking when waking my hackintosh. However if you tried a bunch of other things before following this guide it may nto work for you espically if you made changes to the native AppleHDA.kext file. I recommend doing a clean install of macOS and trying again or use the EFI in this ASUS Guide

Thanks, new strix atx is on the way! Do you recommend updating to the latest bios on the strix board or just leave it alone. Also can I use all the same installation guides on your site with high sierra ?

Ok got the Strix board up and running, did the audio fix. If you sleep the computer and try to wake it too fast audio doesn’t work. But if you sleep it and let I spool all the way down properly audio will come back. Otherwise all seems ok. Does this sound normal? (I’m running ASUS STRIX RX580 8GB)

What’s the best method for installing windows 10 for seamless duel booting without glitches?

You know, I may have not been letting sleep all the way with the hero so can’t say for sure, but definitely working great with the strix.

The hero was giving be problems when installing windows to a different drive, it would somehow knock out the bootloader and I’d have to reinstall Mac OS to get it back without having to use USB every time. I like the strix no problems at all, had one kernel panic and never happened again.

I have the Asus Strix RX580, runs great (geek bench 143,000)
I understand that Mac OS doesn’t recognize crossfire but would it do anything for Lightroom/Photoshop/FCP to install a second one?

The new version of the AppleALC that was released 3 days ago breaks the sound on Sierra 10.12.6. I have not tried High Sierra yet. Just wanted to let you know.

The IPS matrix, the viewing angles are very large. Color rendition is excellent. Including, black color – really black, but not gray or with any other shades. For me, the quality of the screen was one of the main criteria for choosing a laptop, since I am creating websites. Asus-customer-support

I’m using this to try and get working audio on an Asus ROG Strix B350-F with the new vanilla kernel (thanks to algrey), my reasoning being it uses exactl the same codec. However, the layout-id might be different, is there a way to determine this? Or is it trial and error only? Plus, do you know if I may need a different HDEF replacement patch? Thank you.

Thank you so much!
I finally got audio to work.
fyi, this works for getting audio with my motherboard: asus prime z370a
This is what happened: I installed hackintosh by following one of your other guides. Then I had no audio. I deleted few audio kexts then added voodoohd. I still had no audio. Then I found this guide of yours. And voila. So thank you for that.
